  3. Welcome back to Grade 5/6 at Richmond PS! The wonderful new Grade 5/6s have hit the ground running in 2020, and we’re settling in to our routines and classrooms. Our Inquiry topic for this term is a focus on Australian History and Geography from the First Fleet to 1901.

Our Inquiry topic for this term is a focus on Australian History and Geography from the First Fleet to 1901. Students will focus on the individuals and groups (including ATSI and migrants) that have impacted the shape of Australia. They will also investigate the relationship between the geographical characteristics of places, who lives there and how they use the spaces. They will participate in discussions about past events in Australia and globally and explore how times have changed.

In Literacy we will begin by writing an in-depth persuasive piece on a topic of students’ choice. In addition to this, students will again maintain a Writer’s Notebook and will use these books to collect ‘seeds’ (words, pictures, sketches, memories) to ‘grow’ into story ideas, which they will then draft, edit, revise and publish. In Reading, we have begun practising our literature circles roles in class. During our class reading sessions students will also practice independent and cooperative learning through comprehension activities, discussion and spelling explorations.

Some Important Reminders and requests:

We always appreciate the donation of a box of tissues per family to the area – if everyone sends in a box, we can usually get through the year!

Our school’s iPad program will begin on Monday, February 10. This will give time for our students to set up their workbook and writing routines before we introduce any technology to the classroom.

The Victorian Government’s Ministerial mobile phone policy has been in place from the start of this term.

Students have been advised that if they choose to bring mobile phones or smart watches to school, they must have them switched off and securely stored in classroom lock boxes during school hours.

We have several excursions and activities such as Lit Circles planned for the year and often appreciate your help! Don’t forget if you’d like to join us, you will need a current Working With Children Check which is super easy to obtain. Information about how to apply for one is at: http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

Class timetables will go up on the school website in the next week or two to help students get organised. Each teacher’s email address is on the timetable if you need to contact them. Thanks also to our Parent Reps for 2020 – Sarah Carter-Curtis (5/6C), Krysia Mosley (5/6S), David Feehan (5/6R) & Jo Tyrrell and Kate Swayne (5/6J) for their much appreciated assistance!
